THOUSAND OAKS, Calif., Jan. 6 (UPI) -- Nikki Bacharach, daughter of U.S. composer and songwriter Burt Bacharach and actress Angie Dickinson, has died by her own hand, the family announced.

"She quietly and peacefully committed suicide to escape the ravages to her brain brought on by Asperger's, a form of autism," Dickinson and Bacharach said in an announcement.

Nikki, 40, was the only child of Bacharach and Dickinson, who were married from 1965 to 1980. Bacharach had three other children from other marriages.

She studied geology at Cal Lutheran. But her parents said that her poor eyesight kept her from pursuing the subject professionally.

The Ventura County coroner said that Nikki Bacharach used helium and a plastic bag in her suicide at her home in Thousand Oaks, Calif., World Entertainment News Network reported.

Funeral arrangements were pending.
