'Star Wars' joins Pasadena's Rose parade

PASADENA, Calif., Dec. 29 (UPI) -- The Tournament of Roses parade in Pasadena, Calif., plans to feature "Star Wars" floats with Darth Vader and 200 storm troopers.

George Lucas is using this opportunity to reward the people who love his movies more than most other people would say is healthy, the Daily Variety reported.

The "Star Wars Spectacular"" will feature many characters and will be "bookended" by two floats, the report said.

The best part about the floats is that a lot of the characters will be played by members of the 501st Legion, a group of 3,500 hardcore fans who appear often appear in public in full "Star Wars" costume, Variety said.

The 501st makes its own accurate replica costumes and members participate in fundraisers and charity events and are also sometimes used at Lucas Film's official events.

"When we were releasing 'Episode III' around the world, we'd call up the local garrison and ask them to provide some atmosphere and color around the premiere," said Tom Warner, Lucas Film's senior director of marketing. "George was so impressed with these guys -- with their dedication and professionalism -- he wanted to do something to get recognition for them."
