Cuaron uses 'Children' as world commentary

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 21 (UPI) -- Director Alfonso Cuaron has intensified his Hollywood adaptation of P.D. James' novel "Children of Men" in order to make a commentary about the world today.

The Los Angeles Times reported that the 45-year-old director admitted that he and his crew added more strife to their film adaptation of James' apocalyptic literary work in order to expose issues facing the world these days.

"We didn't want to do a science fiction movie," Cuaron said. "We wanted to do a movie about the state of things."

"Children" focuses on the near extinction of the human race as a worldwide infertility crisis breeds violence, surrender and desperation among the world's population.

The film's star, actor Clive Owen, said the drama, which will have a limited release Christmas Day, does indeed represent a warning for the world that is filled with political and social discourse.

"It's more relevant than most movies that are set in the present," Owen told the Times. "It's not farfetched. It's a cautionary tale."
