Prince to play Super Bowl halftime show

NEW YORK, Dec. 11 (UPI) -- Pop star Prince will headline the halftime show at Super Bowl XLI in Miami, the NFL has announced.

The six-time Grammy Award winner is the third Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member in a row to get the Super Bowl halftime show gig -- following Paul McCartney in 2005 and Mick Jagger earlier this year.

The Super Bowl is set for Feb. 4 at Dolphin Stadium. It will be televised by CBS.

An estimated 141 million viewers tuned in to last year's game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Seattle Seahawks, NFL.com said.

The NFL has taken a more cautious approach to programming the halftime festivities, ever since Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction" at the 2004 game caused a backlash among some viewers that resulted in FCC action against CBS and stations that televised the show.

Last year, Jagger's microphone was turned down when he sang raunchy lyrics.

Prince's early work had its share of sexually explicit lyrics and erotic stage shows, but the performer has "toned down" his act in recent years, NFL.com said.
