NEW YORK, Dec. 10 (UPI) -- Singer Taylor Hicks says his intense focus on music led to him to the winner's circle last season of the hit U.S. TV series, "American Idol."
The 30-year-old singer, whose self-titled album launches Tuesday, credits dedication to his craft for helping him win over Katherine McPhee during the series' fifth season, the New York Post reported.
"I won because all I did was sleep, eat and breathe music -- nothing came at the expense of the music," Hicks said. "I have focus, and I don't just mean when I was on 'American Idol.' My focus goes back to when I was a struggling songwriter and performer."
The singer, who admitted he wasn't the best singer on "Idol" last season, said his dedication has been detrimental to his personal life.
"Trying to balance the music with a personal relationship has been tough on me over the years," he told the Post. "It's going to get even tougher on me before the day comes when I can settle down with the right girl."
