Board of Review names 'Iwo Jima' best pic

NEW YORK, Dec. 6 (UPI) -- The National Board of Review in New York Wednesday kicked off the 2006 movie awards season, naming Clint Eastwood's "Letters from Iwo Jima" best picture.

Martin Scorsese was named best director for "The Departed," the organization said on its Web site.

Forest Whitaker won best actor as the late Ugandan dictator Idi Amin in "The Last King of Scotland." Helen Mirren won best actress as Queen Elizabeth II in "The Queen."

Pedro Almodovar's "Volver" won for best foreign film, and former Vice President Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth" won for best documentary. "Cars" took the prize for best animated feature.

Joining "Letters from Iwo Jima" on the organization's list of the 10 best movies of 2006 were: "The Departed"; "Blood Diamond"; "The Painted Veil"; and "Flags of Our Fathers," Eastwood's companion film to "Letters from Iwo Jima."

Both films provide an account of the pivotal World War II battle for control of the Pacific island -- one from the U.S. perspective, and the other from Japan's point of view.

The rest of the top 10 were: "The History Boys"; "Little Miss Sunshine"; "Notes on a Scandal" and "Devil Wears Prada"' and "Babel."
