Broadway adaptation of 'Fidelity' begins

NEW YORK, Nov. 20 (UPI) -- Previews of the stage adaptation of author Nick Hornby's novel "High Fidelity" began Monday night at Broadway's Imperial Theatre.

The musical, which had its official world premiere recently in Boston, focuses on the troubled romantic life of a record store owner and is scheduled for Dec. 7 opening night at the Broadway locale, said Playbill.

The Hornby novel had previously found its way to the big screen as well when actor John Cusack embodied emotionally confused store owner Rob for a 2000 film.

For the new Broadway production, that role is being filled by stage regular Will Chase, with actress Jenn Colella playing his love interest.

The Walter Bobbie-directed production was adapted to the stage through a screenplay from "Rabbit Hole" playwright David Lindsay-Abaire and with music organized by composer Tom Kitt.

Playbill said that included in Monday's preview as parts of the musical's score were songs such as "No. 5 With a Bullet" and "Desert Island Top 5 Break-Ups," that represent the show's lead character's penchant for writing top 5 lists.
