ROME, Nov. 10 (UPI) -- A new exhibit in Rome is focusing on what may have driven Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio to paint two renditions of one of his most popular works.
Rome's Santa Maria del Popolo church Friday began offering fans of the famed Italian artist a chance to see both renditions of "Conversion of Saint Paul on the Way to Damascus" -- and postulate why Caravaggio made two renditions -- said the Italian press agency ANSA.
Some have suggested that the artist, who is known for his mastery of chiaroscuro lighting, created the works over his own artistic frustration. Others have said the second version was created after the original was rejected by its commissioner.
In any case, the original "Conversion" on cypress wood will be joined by its near-double on canvas at the Roman church for the exhibit.
