Ibsen gained international fame for plays such as "A Doll's House" and the controversial 1882 work, "An Enemy of the People."

"I think we're proud of Ibsen," said author Helene Uri of Norway, where Ibsen is seen as a veritable national hero. "We like having a national literary hero like him. There aren't many Norwegians who are world famous."

Aftenposten said the Ibsen Museum in the Norwegian capital of Oslo has been crowded with Ibsen since the anniversary celebration began.
