Gritty Clash documentary to rock Sundance

PARK CITY, Utah, Nov. 8 (UPI) -- A new documentary on Joe Strummer, the front man for the seminal punk band the Clash, has been added to the roster of Utah's Sundance Film Festival.

The angry English band might seem out of place in scenic Utah, but billboard.com said Wednesday that Strummer is a hero to such Hollywood hipsters as Johnny Depp and John Cusack -- not to mention U2's Bono and the Red Hot Chili Peppers -- all of whom were interviewed for Julien Temple's film "The Future Is Unwritten."

Temple is no stranger to the British punk scene of the 1970s and early 80s. He did the Sex Pistols epic "Filth and Fury."

Although the Clash was noted for its anti-establishment venom, Strummer has some fans among U.S. first responders.

Temple told Billboard a Los Angeles firefighter approved a bonfire permit when he heard the project was about Strummer, and a New York police officer declined to issue a traffic ticket to a film crew member when he found out about the Clash connection.
