Concerns push Spears to request custody

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 8 (UPI) -- Concerns for her children's safety may have been the reason Britney Spears' sought sole parental custody in her Los Angeles divorce petition.

Us Weekly correspondent Katrina Zisch told CBS' "The Early Show" that the 24-year-old singer had concerns that her future ex-husband, Kevin Federline, is a bad influence on their two young children. Spears' petition would grant Federline visiting rights with Sean Preston, 1, and 2-month-old Jayden James.

"I think she realizes Kevin is not a good influence for her kids and he's lucky to get those rights," Zisch said.

Meanwhile, TMZ.com reported Federline plans to challenge Spears' custody petition, possibly as a means to get a better financial settlement from the pop singer. He had signed a pre-nuptial agreement prior to their wedding two years ago.

The 28-year-old rapper's approach to the custody issue could be based on the way Spears reportedly notified him that she would seek a divorce -- by sending him a text message while he was filming a TV interview Monday night.
