TAYLOR, Mich., Nov. 2 (UPI) -- The racist words tossed around in "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" have gotten Mark Twain's classic banned from another U.S. school system.
The Detroit suburb of Taylor has pulled the novel from its syllabus of books being taught in the school system, following complaints from an African-American parent.
The Detroit News said Thursday the brouhaha started when an English teacher thought it would be a great idea to have her students act out scenes from the book. The repeated racial slurs made the sole African-American kid in the class uncomfortable.
For now, the book will sit on the shelves and if any students want to read it, they will have to be read it to themselves.
The News said the liberal use of the "N word" in "Huckleberry Finn" has made the 1885 novel one of the most banned books in the United States, despite its reputation among many U.S. literary scholars as one of the great American novels.
