BBC comic Brand cut for being 'too edgy'

LONDON, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- British comedian Russell Brand has been fired from his BBC 6 Music digital radio station position for what one insider called being "too edgy."

The 31-year-old comic, who has been lauded for his edgy on-air humor, will make his last appearance as host for the BBC station Sunday, after network executives decided to part ways with the controversial star, said the British Daily Star.

"They couldn't handle all the insanity that goes on around Russell," said an insider. "He produces a great radio show but is just a little bit too edgy and unpredictable for the BBC to handle."

Being released from a job for his outrageous on-air material is nothing new for Brand, who was fired by MTV in 2001 -- after he appeared dressed as Osama bin Laden the day after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

The Daily Star said Brand has been linked to a possible on-air position at Radio 2, whose head Lesley Douglas praised the comic last month.
