LOS ANGELES, Oct. 12 (UPI) -- Hogan Scheffer, the new writer for the U.S. soap opera "Days of Our Lives," has promised that changes are on the horizon for its character Marlena Evans Black.

Scheffer said that he is disappointed in the way the series has begun to develop Black, who is played by actress Deidre Hall, and swears that the character's less-than-intelligent days are behind her.

"She will be a heroine again," Sheffer told TV Guide of his planned alterations to the series' characters, "and she will have a great story. John and Marlena, Bo and Hope and Kayla and Steve are very central to what's going to be happening in the next few months."

TV Guide said that also ahead for the popular series, which debuted in 1965, will be a visit from singer Smokey Robinson who sings some of its characters a track from his new album, "Timeless Love."
