McCoy Tyner still in the jazz scene

MILWAUKEE, Oct. 3 (UPI) -- In a world full of pop music, solo artists and five piece bands, the piano-led trio is still as strong as ever in the jazz world.

Dave Brubeck, Mariah McPartland, Oscar Peterson, Ahmad Jamal, Billy Taylor and McCoy Turner are all still in the game and selling records, though a few have taken time off for health problems, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reported Tuesday.

Tyner has the strongest presence of the Jaz pianists still in the game, his resume includes four Grammy awards and positions in most jazz hall of fames.

He was also designated as a Jazz Master four years ago, by the National Endowment for the Arts.

The 67-year-old pianist is getting new attention due to the reviving interest in John Coltrane, said the Journal-Sentinel.

The newfound Coltrane uproar comes from the "lost" recording and a commemoration of the saxophonist's birth on Sept. 23, 80 years ago.

Tyner was Coltrane's Pianist from 1960-65.
