LONDON, Sept. 23 (UPI) -- A nephew's run-in with British police has caused author Rodney Wingfield to pull the plug on his popular Jack Frost detective books.
Wingfield said the way his nephew was treated by Essex police has torpedoed his faith in law enforcement and prompted him to make his current book the last in the series.
"Their actions made it impossible for me to write any more pro-police Frost novels," Wingfield told The Scotsman. "The book I'm working on will be my last."
The newspaper said Saturday that Wingfield's nephew was picked up last March on suspicion of stealing a battery and charged in the town of Pitsea. Wingfield said investigators badgered the young man for a confession even though he did not match the thief's description and refused to check out alibi witnesses.
Wingfield said Frost, whose exploits as a police detective became the basis of a television series, would likely be killed off in the sixth and final installment.
