DiCaprio expected the unexpected with Jack

NEW YORK, Sept. 18 (UPI) -- Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio says Jack Nicholson lived up to his reputation for being unpredictable on the set of their new film, "The Departed."

In the new big-screen crime drama, Nicholson plays a gangster and DiCaprio plays an undercover cop trying to bring him down, while posing as a mob associate.

"We kind of expected the unexpected. ... For me, there were a number of different scenes where I had no idea what was going to happen," DiCaprio told reporters in New York.

The "Titanic" and "The Aviator" star then recalled hearing Nicholson tell director Martin Scorsese he thought he should be more intimidating in his scenes with DiCaprio.

"I came in the next day and the prop guy told me: 'Well, be careful. He's got a fire extinguisher, a gun, some matches and a bottle of whiskey.'"

DiCaprio went on to say he knew Nicholson was a professional actor, but admitted his unpredictability helped DiCaprio play a guy who is in "a constant 24-hour panic attack" about being found out.

"There were some memories that I will never forget," he said.
