New 'CBS Evening News' format to stay

NEW YORK, Sept. 14 (UPI) -- Changes on the "CBS Evening News" in New York since Katie Couric started as anchor less than two weeks ago have gotten both positive and negative reviews.

But CBS News head Sean McManus said he is making no adjustments in the short term, the New York Post reported.

"We've said from Day One that there are things on the show that are going to work and things that might not work," McManus told the Post.

The Free Speech segment in which guests such as Rush Limbaugh speak their minds has been the target of criticism.

Ratings have gone up and down. CBS fell to third place behind NBC and ABC on Monday night, but was in first place Tuesday with 8.6 million viewers.

"This is going to be a very long race," McManus said to the Post. "Considering where we've been for the last 10 years, just to be in a horse race is something that I'm thrilled about."
