Internet users bet the odds on Couric

NEW YORK, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- An online bookie is offering 13-2 odds the "CBS Evening News" in New York will have a viewing audience of more than 8.5 million on Katie Couric's first night.

The news program -- which has been anchored by Bob Schieffer since longtime anchor Dan Rather stepped down -- has been averaging 7.36 million viewers, the New York Post reported. Couric will take over as anchor Sept. 5. wagers the odds are 5-2 that Couric will maintain the same ratings -- between 7 million and 7.5 million -- Media Life magazine said. That outcome would keep the show in third place behind ABC with Charlie Gibson and NBC with Brian Williams.

ABC's "World News Tonight" draws an average of 8.2 million viewers and the "NBC Nightly News" draws about 9 million.
