LOS ANGELES, Aug. 28 (UPI) -- After more than 20 years without a major TV role, Leslie Nielsen may have landed one in the new U.S. comedy pilot, "Lipshitz Saves the World."
The Hollywood Reporter said the "Naked Gun" star could find himself in his first major TV role since 1982 when he starred in "Police Squad!" if the new pilot is picked up NBC.
In the comedy, the 80-year-old actor plays a mentor to its title character who, as the title suggests, could hold the world's future in his hands.
"I'm a lifelong fan and wrote the part specifically for him, never having met him, and with no knowledge of whether or not he'd take to it," said writer Dan Fogelman, who penned the pilot and the hit film "Cars." "But he could not have been more gracious and responsive once he read the script."
The paper said prior to joining the cast of "Lipshitz" Nielsen had only dabbled in television after 1982 taking on small roles on "The Golden Girls" and "Due South," while also participating in CBS' "Game Show Marathon" as a contestant earlier this year.
