LOS ANGELES, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- "Invincible" proved pretty tough at the U.S. box office, claiming the No. 1 weekend spot with a little more than $17 million in gross receipts.
"Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby" appeared to be running out of gas, but still held on to second place with $8 million for the weekend in its fourth week of release.
All figures are studio-supplied estimates from Box Office Mojo.
"Little Miss Sunshine" skipped into third place with $7.5 million; "Beerfest" guzzled up fourth with $6.5 million; "Accepted" was barely acceptable in its second week at fifth with more than $6.4 million; "World Trade Center" took in more than $6.39 million in its third weekend for sixth; "Step Up" rose to the occasion with more than $6.18 million for the seventh spot; "Idlewild" took eighth with $5.89 million in its first weekend in limited release.
The much ballyhooed "Snakes on a Plane" crawled to ninth place with $5.86 million in its second weekend.
The animated "Barnyard: The Original Party Animals" was still scratching and pecking in its fourth weekend, taking in more than $5.4 million to round out the top 10.
