Comic Nichol takes Edinburgh comedy prize

EDINBURGH, Scotland, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- Comic Phil Nichol has won the best comedy prize of the If.comEddies Awards at Scotland's Edinburgh Fringe Festival for his show "The Naked Racist."

The recently renamed awards ceremony, formerly the Perrier Awards, awarded the Scottish comic its top comedy award and its corresponding $15,000 prize for his uniquely titled one-hour show, the BBC said.

"Racist" follows Nichol's account of a wild weekend in Amsterdam, Netherlands, featuring intriguing characters ranging from drug dealers to racists.

Also recognized at the awards show, which changed its name due to its new sponsor Intelligent Finance, was sole female nominee Josie Long, who won in the Best Newcomer category, the BBC said.

Topping off the event's comedy awards was Bristol comic Mark Watson, who was presented with the Panel Prize, a special jury award, for his ability to represent the Fringe's spirit with a 36-hour stand-up marathon, the BBC said.
