'Weeds' welcomes Death Cab for Cutie

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- The band Death Cab for Cutie is set to cover the theme song of the California drug-dealing drama "Weeds" when the Showtime series returns later this month.

The "Transatlanticism" band will cover folk singer Malvina Reynolds' "Little Boxes" on the Aug. 21 episode of the quirky drama, which stars actress Mary-Louis Parker as a drug-dealing suburbanite mother.

Death Cab's unusual musical offering is part of a concept for the second season of the cable show, which premieres next Monday, in which a variety of musical acts such as Elvis Costello and Rilo Kiley singer Jenny Lewis take turns covering the show's theme song, the Los Angeles Times reported.

"Everybody's probably going to do folk versions or cover it just the way it is," Death Cab lead singer Ben Gibbard said of the planned covers. "We wanted to be the complete opposite. So, ours sounds like Death Cab trying to be early XTC."
