LOS ANGELES, July 31 (UPI) -- Actor Mel Gibson, whose alleged anti-Semitic rant during a Malibu, Calif., drunken driving arrest was widely reported, has entered a rehab center.

Gibson Saturday admitted saying "things that I do not believe to be true and which are despicable," adding, "I am deeply ashamed of everything I said, and I apologize to anyone who I have offended."

Gibson's apology was called "unremorseful and insufficient" by the national director of the Anti-Defamation League, the Los Angeles Times said Monday.

"His tirade finally reveals his true self and shows that his protestations during the debate over his film 'The Passion of the Christ,' that he is such a tolerant, loving person, were a sham," ADL head Abraham H. Foxman said. posted four pages of the initial arrest record filed by deputies Friday, which quoted the actor/director as saying, among other things, "The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world" and asking the arresting officer, "Are you a Jew?"

His publicist, Alan Nierob, told the E! News show Monday that Gibson was now in a a treatment facility for alcoholism.

Also Monday, it was announced the Los Angeles County district attorney's office was reviewing the handling of Gibson's arrest by the sheriff's department amid charges of a coverup.
