ABC plans contemporary 'Peter Pan' for TV

LOS ANGELES, July 27 (UPI) -- Sony Pictures producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron are planning a contemporary musical version of "Peter Pan" for U.S. television in 2007.

Fifty years after NBC broadcast the original Broadway musical starring Mary Martin, the story of "Peter Pan" will be produced as a TV movie, Daily Variety reported.

Zadan said he and Meron have been wanting to do "Peter Pan" since 1993, when they worked with composer Jule Styne "Gypsy," another of his musicals for TV.

The script will be written by Irene Mecchi, who wrote "Annie" and worked on Disney's "The Lion King" and "Hunchback of Notre Dame."

"This is a huge priority for us and has been over the almost two years it took to get the rights," ABC executive Quinn Taylor said. The project is "in the tradition of classic ABC musicals, with huge family appeal across every generation."
