CW holding off on long-term commitments

LOS ANGELES, July 19 (UPI) -- CW Television Network is launching new seasons of "Veronica Mars" and "Gilmore Girls," but longer-term commitments to the two U.S. series are elusive.

The shows will be paired together on Tuesday nights, starting in September, the New York Daily News reported.

Rob Thomas, who created "Veronica Mars" has concepts for future stories, but can only count on 13 new episodes of the series. To build audience, he's created three mystery plots -- one lasting nine episodes, the next lasting seven, and the final lasting six. If enough viewers catch on, Thomas hopes CW might end up ordering the full 22 episodes.

"Gilmore Girls" has a new executive producer, David S. Rosenthal, although that show's long-term future is unclear as well. Star Lauren Graham had been unhappy with some of the previous story lines, but has been encouraged by Rosenthal's involvement, saying "that it feels like there's a reason to keep going."

Her co-star, Alexis Bledel, agreed.

"There's going to be a lot of differences from our past seasons, because of the (backstage) structure change, so I'm looking forward to seeing what that's like," Bledel said.
