'Inishmore' not so shocking to Gerety

NEW YORK, July 17 (UPI) -- Peter Gerety says his work in edgy productions with Rhode Island's Trinity Repertory Co. prepared him for the wicked humor of "The Lieutenant of Inishmore."

A veteran of more than 100 productions with the famed theater company, Gerety can now be seen on Broadway in Martin McDonagh's Tony-nominated, blood-soaked play about an Irish terrorist (David Wilmot) who comes home to avenge the accidental death of his beloved cat.

Gerety plays the incensed pet owner's frantic father.

"I come from a background of working with a sort of mad genius by the name of Adrian Hall from the Trinity Rep.," Gerety told UPI in a recent phone interview.

"I worked with him for many years and he was just crazy as a loon, but did brilliant, brilliant stuff; the best Shakespeare I've ever seen, the best Brecht I've ever seen. And he would do original pieces that were pretty far out," he said. "So, I've done a lot of stuff that's really pretty outrageous."

Often cast in comedic roles, Gerety said he relished the chance to play the "the angry old guy" this time around.

"I find that really fun and interesting to do."
