U.S. director takes top honor at film fest

KARLOVY VARY, Czech Republic, July 9 (UPI) -- U.S. director Laurie Collyer won the top prize at the Czech Republic's 41st Karlovy Vary International Film Festival for her film "Sherrybaby."

Collyer's film about a drug addict's relationship with her daughter also won a best actress prize for Maggie Gyllenhaal.

Andrzej Hudziak won best actor for his performance in "Several People, Little Time," the festival announced on its Web site.

Norwegian filmmaker Joachim Trier won best director for his film "Reprise," the BBC reported.

Austrian filmmaker Andreas Horvath won the short documentary award for "Views of a Retired Night Porter."

Actor-director Andy Garcia, producer Robert Shaye and Czech director Jan Nemec were honored with Crystal Globe awards for outstanding artistic contribution to the world cinema.

The nine-day festival attracted more than 1,500 film professionals and journalists from around the world, screening 230 films and documentaries, the BBC reported.
