'Porgy and Bess' lose weight for London

LONDON, July 1 (UPI) -- "Porgy and Bess" the opera has been trimmed down to musical size and is headed for the London stage.

Director Trevor Nunn has reduced George and Ira Gershwin's opera, first produced in the United States in 1935, from four hours to two and a half, The New York Times said.

"The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess" is scheduled to open at the Savoy Theater Nov. 9, with previews starting Oct. 25.

Nunn has been trying to drum up support for a new "Porgy" since 1986, when he directed a famous production of the opera at England's Glyndebourne Festival Opera, the Times said.

"It's the most sensational, wonderful, wonderful score, and so many of the people in the world know it but they don't know they know it," Nunn told the Times from London.
