Dan Rather exits the CBS family

NEW YORK, June 15 (UPI) -- Dan Rather's stint on CBS is coming to an end; the network said the man who sat in the anchor chair for 24 years will depart by this fall.

The executives at CBS recognize Rather's contributions over forty years and are not trying to boot him because of the controversy surrounding his botched story on President Bush and the National Guard, the Washington Post, citing network sources, reported Thursday.

Rather's contract ends in November, but it's possible he might leave before that, depending on negotiations with CBS.

Rather has said several times that "my best work is still ahead of me."

At his peak, Rather anchored the evening news, helped with "60 Minutes," hosted "48 Hours" and did regular radio commentaries.
