Leary: Fans angry about 'Rescue Me' death

NEW YORK, May 30 (UPI) -- "Rescue Me" co-creators Denis Leary and Peter Tolan say fans were furious with them for killing off a child character on their show last season.

Connor, the 10-year-old son of Leary's character, Tommy, was killed by a drunken driver at the end of the firefighter drama's sophomore season. Because of his death, Tommy's wife leaves him and his uncle ends up in jail for shooting the guy who ran the boy over.

Despite the anger the decision caused, Tolan and Leary insist they don't regret killing Connor off, since it served the show and its characters.

"People were outraged and I'm talking about our families," Tolan told reporters in a recent teleconference. "The thing we both heard over and over and over for months was, 'I can't believe you killed that kid.'"

Leary said he didn't realize so many people watched the show until celebrities approached him backstage at a U2 concert and told them how upset they were.
