'X Men' opens strong

HOLLYWOOD, May 27 (UPI) -- "X Men: The Last Stand" is off to a strong start, with $44.1 million in box-office receipts in its first day in U.S. theaters, Box Office Mojo estimated.

The third -- and ostensibly final -- installment in the "X Men" movie series had the second-largest opening of all time, behind "Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith" -- which took in $50 million on its first day in theaters in 2005.
