Carl Palmer brings solo band to U.S.

LONDON, May 23 (UPI) -- Superstar drummer Carl Palmer is on a mission to re-establish his name in the United States, where he enjoyed great success during the '70s and '80s.

"I've been working in Europe for the last five years quite solidly," explains Palmer, who started his career in the British band Atomic Rooster before enjoying worldwide success with Emerson, Lake & Palmer and Asia. "It's been a great change, but obviously I need to get back to America, 'cause that's where my career took off."

The drummer begins a 32-date "Carl Palmer Celebrates the Music of ELP" tour on Wednesday in Hamilton, Ontario, showing off a new trio that substitutes guitars for Keith Emerson's keyboards. Palmer has released two live albums with the group and is working on original material as well.

Besides his own touring, Palmer will be part of an Asia 25th anniversary reunion tour that starts September 1 in Jim Thorpe, Pa.
