NEW YORK, May 19 (UPI) -- Venerable "60 Minutes" correspondent Mike Wallace reveals he once tried to commit suicide.
The revelation comes during a special edition of the program devoted entirely to the 20-time Emmy Award winner.
Morley Safer sits down with Wallace, 88, in Sunday night's tribute to the journalist stepping down at the end of the 2005-2006 season.
The 20-time Emmy winner has never kept his battle with depression a secret and has publicly advocated people seek help to ease their suffering, but he has never before discussed his suicide attempt 20 years ago, CBS News reported on its Web site.
After admitting he tried to kill himself, Wallace said: "I don't know why the hell you asked me that question, because other people have. It's the first time I have answered it honestly."
The years since being treated for depression, "have been the best in my life," Wallace said.
