Fox recalls Shirley Temple bracelets

LOS ANGELES, May 5 (UPI) -- Charm bracelets tucked inside Shirley Temple DVDs have unsafe levels of lead and are being recalled by Twentieth Century Fox.

DVD packages for "Curly Top," "The Little Colonel" and "Heidi" contain pink boxes with bracelets with dangling lollipops, treble clefs, pigs and ponies, the Los Angeles Times reported Friday.

About 730,000 of the bracelets were in DVDs sold at U.S. retailers and on the Internet.

A spokeswoman for the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission told the Times Fox discovered the lead by commissioning its own tests and was doing "the right thing" by ordering the recall.

The type of lead found in the bracelets can be easily absorbed into the bloodstream. Lead exposure in children has been blamed for neurological damage, delayed mental and physical development and attention deficit disorder.

Fox is offering free postage and a family film DVD for the return of the bracelets charms. For more information go to dvdcharmrecall.com on the Internet or call (877) 541-2229.
