Original 'Star Wars' trilogy hits DVD

LOS ANGELES, May 4 (UPI) -- "Star Wars" purists may be happy to learn the original theatrical versions of the first three films are coming out on DVD.

Fox announced two-disc DVDS of "Star Wars," "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi" will be released Sept. 12 at a price of $30 each, USA Today reported Thursday. Each package will contain the original theatrical version along with the 2004 digitally restored version.

Director George Lucas proclaimed the 2004 "Star Wars Trilogy" DVDs as the "definitive versions" of the classics and Lucasfilm's Jim Ward told USA Today the director has not changed his mind.

"What we've always said is George viewed the revised versions of the films as the definitive versions," Ward said, adding the quality of the new/old DVDs will not be as good as the restored versions.

"It is state of the art, as of 1993, and that's not as good as state of the art 2006," he said.
