Copperfield foils robbers with his magic

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla., April 25 (UPI) -- Illusionist David Copperfield used magic to foil armed robbers in West Palm Beach, Fla., it was reported Tuesday.

Two gun-toting teenagers confronted Copperfield and his female assistants as they walked after their show at the Kravis Center Sunday night, The Palm Beach Post reported Tuesday.

The women handed over their purses, but Copperfield pulled an old trick out of his hat and made it look like his pockets were empty -- even though he had a cell phone, wallet and passport on him at the time.

"I had a gun pointed at my head from six inches away," Copperfield said between shows in Sunrise, Fla., Tuesday. "I'm pretty good under pressure. That's my job. But I had two young ladies with me."

Believing he had nothing to give, the robbers fled the scene in a black Malibu with Kentucky licence plates, the newspaper said. Copperfield was able to give the license plate number to police and four suspects were nabbed within minutes.

It turns out the pair were wanted for questioning in at least five other recent robberies. The three 17-year-olds and one 18-year-old were jailed without bond Tuesday on charges of armed robbery.
