'Apocalypto' now looking at winter release

LOS ANGELES, April 17 (UPI) -- Disney has moved Mel Gibson's "Apocalypto," about the decline of the Mayan empire, from its original late summer release date to Dec. 8.

August has a crowded film field, while December's crop of films is currently lighter than last year's, Daily Variety reported Monday.

"Apocalypto" was originally scheduled to hit U.S. theaters Aug. 4, which would have put it up against Will Ferrell's latest comedy, "Talladega Nights" and the cartoon, "Ant Bully," Variety said.
