NEW YORK, April 4 (UPI) -- Spanish actor Antonio Banderas says he plans to return to Broadway in a new musical based on the 1995 film, "Don Juan DeMarco."
The star of the new dance movie, "Take the Lead," earned a Tony nomination for his performance in the 2003 musical, "Nine," based on Federico Fellini's film, "8 1/2."
Banderas told UPI Monday he will return to Broadway next year for the show, expected to be helmed by his "Nine" director, David Leveaux.
"I think it actually will be an interesting play," Banderas said. "I think it is a very smart proposal for theater."
Banderas emphasized, however, not all movies have the stuff to be Broadway musicals.
"If the proposal is good, like 'The Producers,' for example, they are very welcome. But, sometimes, they are just like 'Boom!' and they fall," he said, adding a positive side of Broadway adaptations is they often introduce new generations to movies with which they may have been unfamiliar. "As was the case with '8 1/2' by Federico Fellini. So, it absolutely can work."
