George Clooney wins Oscar for 'Syriana'

LOS ANGELES, March 5 (UPI) -- George Clooney was named best supporting actor for "Syriana," during the Academy Awards Sunday night at Hollywood's Kodak Theatre.

Clooney seemed surprised when his name was announced, joking the Oscar probably meant he was out of the running for the other categories he was nominated in -- best director as well as co-writer for "Good Night, and Good Luck."

He accepted his award while paying tribute to his fellow supporting actor nominees.

"Unless we all did the same role, I don't know how you can compare it," he said. "I am truly honored to be up here."

An outspoken political activist, Clooney noted how Hollywood has never been afraid to tackle important issues such as AIDS and civil rights.

"This group of people gave Hattie McDaniel an Oscar in 1939 when blacks were still sitting in the back of theaters," he said. "I am proud to be a member of this academy."
