NEW YORK, Feb. 15 (UPI) -- Actor/rapper Mos Def says he is having trouble keeping up with the $10,000 in child support he was ordered to pay his estranged wife starting Jan. 1.
The rapper, whose real name is Dante Smith, was ordered to pay the sum to his estranged wife, Maria Yapes-Smith, when he filed for divorce in New York, the New York Post reported Wednesday.
But the Brooklyn native and host of HBO's "Def Poetry Jam" told a judge Tuesday he was struggling because in addition to his 7- and 8-year-old daughters with Yapes-Smith, he is also supporting his three other children.
He has fallen about $2,000 short in payments to Yapes-Smith and his attorney told the court "it's the best he can do under the circumstances," the Post said.
"He has several children," Stephen Goldfeder told the judge. "He's always provided for them."
The judge told the Emmy, Tony and Golden Globe nominee to file an amended claim detailing his support and business expenses.
