'Crash' producer loses Oscar bid

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 12 (UPI) -- "Crash" financier Bob Yari will not be part of the production team up for an Academy Award, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has ruled.

The academy rejected an appeal filed by Yari and announced the Oscar night production credits for "Crash" will only include director Paul Haggis and Cathy Schulman, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The Producers Guild of America in December determined Haggis and Schulman were the only two rightful producers of "Crash," the newspaper said.

The Guild had ruled Yari, Mark Harris, actor Don Cheadle and co-writer Bobby Moresco did not perform the duties necessary to qualify as producers.

An upset Yari appealed to the academy, which late last week refused to overturn the PGA's decision, sources told the Times.

Both the academy and PGA declined to comment on the ruling, while a spokesman for Yari said he had not been officially notified of the academy's decision.

New rules limit to three the number of people who can be nominated as producers in Oscar's best picture category.
