LONDON, Feb. 12 (UPI) -- British rocker Pete Doherty says he is ready to "start a drug-free life" with an anti-heroin implant.
The Babyshambles vocalist who escaped a jail sentence last week for multiple charges of drug possession told Britain's Channel 4 News: "I'm not going to make light of the fact that I've been given a great chance, and take crack and heroin," the BBC reported.
"If I was not famous then I would not have the extremes, the corruptness and fortune that led me there in the first place," he said.
The Guardian published pages from a journal Doherty kept during his 13 days in Pentonville Prison in London. He was released last week for his sentencing, which included a 12-month community service order as well as drug rehab.
"Even life without drugs has gotta be better than this malarkey," Doherty wrote.
The newspaper said it did not pay Doherty for publishing his words, but did make a donation to the Prison Reform Trust, the BBC said.
