BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., Jan. 31 (UPI) -- Ang Lee's "Brokeback Mountain" received eight nominations for the 78th annual Academy Awards announced in Beverly Hills, Calif., Tuesday morning.
The gay western scored nods for best picture, best director, best actor, supporting actor, supporting actress and adapted screenplay.
Six nominations each went to "Crash" and "Good Night, and Good Luck," which will be up against "Brokeback" for the top award along with "Capote" and "Munich."
The best actor nominees were Philip Seymour Hoffman for "Capote," Heath Ledger for "Brokeback," Joaquin Phoenix for "Walk the Line," Terrence Howard for "Hustle & Flow" and David Strathairn in "Good Night, and Good Luck."
Best actress nominees were Judi Densch for "Mrs. Henderson Presents," Keira Knightley for "Pride and Prejudice," Felicity Huffman for "Transamerica," Charlize Theron for "North Country" and Reese Witherspoon for "Walk the Line."
Best director nods went to George Clooney for "Good Night, and Good Luck," Lee for "Brokeback Mountain," Bennett Miller for "Capote," Paul Haggis for "Crash" and Steven Spielberg for "Munich."
Clooney also received nods for best original screenplay for "Good Night," as well as best supporting actor for "Syriana."
