Fred Savage transitions to 'Crumbs'

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 26 (UPI) -- Fred Savage has put his "Wonder Years" days behind him with his new role as gay Mitch on ABC's "Crumbs."

Viewers watched Savage grow up as Kevin during the "Wonder Years" which ran from 1988 to 1993.

"The 'Wonder Years' ended over 12 years ago," Savage, 29 and married, told USA Today. "I think people have been very accepting to see me in other roles."

The show's gay creator/executive producer, Marco Pennette said he approached several actors before Savage -- and all refused to take on a gay character.

Savage said he, too, initially turned down the role, but not because of Mitch's sexual preferences.

The actor said he was simply tired of sitcoms and was focused on directing kids' shows for Nickelodeon and the Disney Channel.

But, Savage relented after Jane Curtin and William Devane agreed to play his parents and Pennette fleshed out his idea, USA Today said.
