NBC cancels 'West Wing'

BURBANK, Calif., Jan. 22 (UPI) -- The Emmy-winning White House drama "The West Wing" is coming to the end of its seven-year run on NBC.

NBC Entertainment President Kevin Reilly announced Sunday the show will go off the air with an hourlong retrospective, followed by an hourlong series finale, on May 14.

"We are proud to have had the opportunity to bring television viewers one of the most acclaimed series in television history," said Reilly.

"The West Wing" won four consecutive Emmys for best drama series in its first four seasons on the air. It won a record nine Emmys in its first season, and has earned 90 Emmy nominations overall.

The show -- created by Aaron Sorkin -- has also won a Peabody Award for Excellence in Television.
