Redford: 'Cassidy' redux idea 'depressing'

SALT LAKE CITY, Jan. 19 (UPI) -- Robert Redford says the notion of Matt Damon and Ben Affleck in a remake of "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" is "depressing."

In an interview with the Deseret Morning News, Redford suggested he doesn't appreciate movie remakes in general -- and particularly wouldn't want to see "Butch Cassidy" remade.

"There is no shortage of good, original ideas, and there's just no point to remakes," he said. "Why do they have to mess with things that were perfect the first time around?"

The newspaper said Redford made the observation "with a groan."

Redford is currently promoting the Sundance Film Festival, which opened Thursday and is scheduled to run through Jan. 29 at Utah venues including Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden and the Sundance resort.
