Winfrey stands behind James Frey

CHICAGO, Jan. 12 (UPI) -- Oprah Winfrey says the message author James Frey sends in his book "A Million Little Pieces" takes precedent over whether or not the tale is truthful.

Frey's memoir shot to the top of bestseller lists last year after the talk show host heavily promoted it for her book club.

Several fabrications in the book were revealed Sunday by The Smoking Gun on its Web site, prompting Random House, the book's publisher, to offer full refunds to buyers this week.

Winfrey called into CNN's Larry King talk show Wednesday night while he was interviewing Frey, the New York Daily News reported.

"Although there are some factual questions, the underlying message of redemption still resonates with me and many others," Winfrey said. "To those who got hope from the book, I say, 'Keep holding on.'"

Frey admitted to King some facts were altered either or protect others or because he remembered wrong.

But, he said, "I stand by the essential truth of the book, which is about redemption, pain and family, a book about getting better."
