Stars celebrate Bloomberg's second term

NEW YORK, Jan. 2 (UPI) -- An all-star lineup led by Liza Minnelli was on hand for the swearing in of New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Minnelli brought the audience to its feet with her performance of "New York, New York," Sunday, the New York Post reported Monday.

More than 5,000 people watched the performance as well as the mayor taking his second oath of office.

Cuban jazz artist Paquito D'Rivera played "America the Beautiful," and the Abyssinian Baptist Church choir from Harlem sang the national anthem.

ABC TV's Barbara Walters handled the introduction of the mayor while actor John Lithgow was master of ceremonies for the event.

Lithgow got laughs from the crowd when he wondered aloud why he was chosen to helm the ceremony, the Post said.

"After all, I come from the tawdry world of show business, not the dignified and stately world of city government," he said.
