Glitter paid families in molestation case

VUNG TAU, Vietnam, Dec. 28 (UPI) -- British glam rocker Gary Glitter reportedly paid $2,000 each to the families of two Vietnamese girls to gain their cooperation in his child molestation case.

In return, the families asked Vietnamese authorities to drop child rape charges against Glitter, whose real name is Paul Francis Gadd, his attorney told the BBC Wednesday.

Police recently announced there was not enough evidence to proceed with the rape charges -- which carried a penalty of death by firing squad, the BBC said. However, authorities may still charge Glitter with child molestation, a lesser crime carrying a maximum sentence of 12 years in jail.

Under Vietnamese law, Glitter can be detained up to one year without charges being filed.

Glitter has denied molesting the 11- and 12-year-old girls in the resort village of Vung Tau. He was arrested Nov. 19 as he tried to leave the country at Ho Chi Minh Airport.

Glitter spent two months in jail in 1999 for possessing child pornography.
